Present : Mary, Gabrielle, Sharon, Ann, Ros, Catherine, Heidi, Lynette
MIA : Heather, Trish, Sandra, Katie
You may remember a few months ago Mary mentioning having another book group fund raiser for October. This will have to be postponed as Mary is not in the best of health and is almost ready to move house. We will wait until Mary is ready for another one.
It’s time to start thinking about reading for 2017 (some of us like to know in advance of Christmas so family can buy something off the list). Can you think of what you’d like us to read next year and let me (Heidi) know at next month’s meeting, via Facebook or via email. A few choices are already sitting on the Reading Lists page.
Discussion : Ann chose the Yalda Crossing for a few reasons – it was recommended by a friend and colleague who used to work with author Noel Beddoe and Ann’s school is in Wiradjuri country and supports Wiradjuri students and promotes better understanding of their culture among the wider student body.
The novel tells a story similar to that of The Secret River of white contact with aboriginal people in the 19th C and a story repeated up and down Australia – contact that is disasterous and deadly for the aboriginal people, in this case the Wiradjuri living along the Murrumbidgee River.
Those of us who had read the book really enjoyed it and it has scored a 4.5.
