For the July Meeting – points to consider

Standard

life_or_death_australia_lgI was watching a couple of episodes of the ABC’s Book Club last night. Michael Robotham is one of the participants in Series 10 Episode 4 during which he is asked  about crime writing.  I thought we could keep these in mind as we read and discuss the July book.

Michael Robotham’s Top 5 Clues to Writing Crime (11:40-13:40 on the video)

  1. Must have a crime – ‘the deader the better’ and a ‘grand or base motive’
  2. Compelling characters
  3. Pace and suspense – speed and suspense – ‘a ticking clock’
  4. Conflict and complications – twists and turns, red-herrings, road blocks – ‘your hero must want something and something must stand in his way’
  5. A sense of place
