March 2016 Meeting

Standard

y648Having a lovely time: Sandra, Katie, Mary, Lynette, Sharon, Ros, Catherine, Heidi and Trish

Missing out: Gabrielle, Heather and Ann

Business:

  1. Welcome to Sandra, Catherine’s friend and neighbour.
  2. Heidi requested permission to invite Barbara for one meeting. Barbara is a volunteer at the Library. Like Gabrielle she has just started a book group and spoke to Heidi about how a book group might operate.
  3. Mary suggested that the Book Thieves get together with her other book group. High Tea at Mary’s on Sunday 22 May to raise money for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea was decided upon.

Discussion: All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr had the group divided. Some found it tedious and predictable, others loved the lyrical prose and the structure of the book which allowed us to catch up with people we were invested in.  The short chapters were appreciated by busy folk.  The rush of an ending was a bit of a fizzer for some.

Among the myriad of topics touched on over the evening, the main theme, which also had us divided, was war. Some have had enough of reading about WWII or any other war, frustrated and angered that nothing has changed (Trump as the next Hitler) and that humanity does not seem to be learning anything from history.

All the light we cannot see scored 3.8 out of 5

The next meeting is on Friday 1 April at Lynette’s house and we will have read The life-changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo.
